Supply Chain Transformation

The Lean Processing Programme

The three-year Lean Processing Programme programme (LEAP) focused on the creation of competitive advantage in the UK upstream automotive market by the application of lean thinking in the steel supply chain to the vehicle assemblers. The programme involved the diagnosis and removal of inter-company and intra-company waste and resulted in substantial improvements in quality levels, increases in the amount of value-add per employee, and building greater competitive advantage.

Collaborators involved:
Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (Innovative Manufacturing Initiative), a network of UK automotive/steel supply chain firms: Corus, Thyssen Krupp, Automotive Body Products, TKA Chassis Camford, Tallent Engineering Ltd, GKN Autostructures Ltd, Steel & Alloy Processing Ltd, LDV Ltd and Wagon Automotive

Introduction:

The main outputs of the programme have included operational and supply chain improvements including creation of a proven suite of mapping tools for focusing supply chain improvement and secondary initiatives to support the sector. Over forty conference and journal papers were produced as well as a lean value stream mapping workbook.
